Racing to uncover the mystery of several light green-shoe-clad severed feet found floating in the Gulf of Mexico, Agent Pendergast is faced with the most inexplicable challenge of his career in this installment of the #1 NYT bestselling series.

Appearing out of nowhere to horrify the quiet resort town of Sanibel Island, Florida, dozens of identical, ordinary-looking shoes float in on the tide and are washed up on the tropical beach—each one with a crudely severed human foot inside.

Called away from vacation elsewhere in the state, Agent Pendergast reluctantly agrees to visit the crime scene—and, despite himself, is quickly drawn in by the incomprehensible puzzle. An early pathology report only adds to the mystery. With an ocean of possibilities confronting the investigation, no one is sure what happened, why, or from where the feet originated. And they desperately need to know: are the victims still alive?

In short order, Pendergast finds himself facing the most complex and inexplicable challenge of his career: a tangled thread of evidence that spans seas and traverses continents, connected to one of the most baffling mysteries in modern medical science. Through shocking twists and turns, all trails lead back to a powerful adversary with a sadistic agenda and who—in a cruel irony—ultimately sees in Pendergast the ideal subject for their malevolent research.

About the Author

The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" ( Publishers Weekly). Preston & Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series, and their recent novels include Verses for the Dead, City of Endless Night, The Obsidian Chamber, and Blue Labyrinth. In addition to his novels and nonfiction works (such as The Lost City of the Monkey God), Preston writes about archaeology for the The New Yorker and National Geographics magazines. Lincoln Child is a Florida resident and former book editor who has published seven novels of his own, including such bestsellers as, Full Wolf Moon and Deep Storm.

this book did not compare to previous pendergast books. The ending felt rushed and the content was slow up till the rush ending. I hope the next books return to the excellence they expect from these authors.

Always love Pendergast but Contance Green really stands out in this story. Was really wondering all through how they would explain the self amputated feet. Wow was surprised at the answer. Read it in a couple of nights the suspense was killing me.

I love the set of characters in this series of Preston and Child novels. Pendergast is the best. A real challenge to Sherlock Holmes style.

Another good Pendergast mystery! I do wish the authors would allow the reader to see more of the story from Pendergast's point of view since he is such a complicated, entertaining character. Overall a good read.

As usually, I didn't want this book to end. The teaser in the last pages sent me looking for the next adventure in Savannah but, alas, there is no such book as yet. On vacation on Florida's Captiva Island, Pendergast is drawn into a bizarre situation where over 100 amputated feet are washed ashore. His boss makes a special trip to ask his help and the latest adventure is off and running. True to character, Pendergast keeps the details of the case close to his vest, making it impossible for those of us who are detectives via mystery stories only to solve the case.

As always, Mr. Preston and Mr. Child have provided us with an amazing literary experience. I highly recommend Crooked River to anyone looking for an intelligently written book that keeps up a fast paced story with well developed characters and an interesting plot.Thank you, gentlemen, for your continued writing. They all can't be home runs. This book is good but just as good as the previous Pendergast novels. The investigation portions seemed a little brief compared to others and it just seemed a rushed. Hopefully the next will be back on track.
