Overview

This study uses household survey data from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to delineate the elements of a market economy and assess the consequences of its creation. The volume compares the conditions in these countries in 1991 and examines the different strategies they've employed since the fragmentation of the USSR. The analysis centers on living standards, and gives special attention to the changing status of women. Anderson teaches economics at Vanderbilt University.
