'The Only Band That Matters' had always suffered when it came to books about them and their achievements. Marcus Gray's 'Last Gang In Town' was more of a myth-busting exercise than the shared celebration that most fans wanted to read, and with the exception of Johnny Green's excellent first hand account of life on the road with the band, the other books on the market failed to offer any new news or insight. 'Rat Patrol' arrived with some promise. It had been sanctioned by the inner circle and was marketed as being 'for' the serious Clash fan / collector. Sadly, it lets itself down. The information offered up is easily available elsewhere. The selection of bootlegs are subjective and inconclusive, and by and large, simple facts are often confused or missed out. (Incorrect tracklisting etc). Quotes are clumsily attributed to the wrong releases, and overall, it feels shoddy and incomplete. I have been a fan of Alan's work in the past - his book with SLF's Jake Burns is great - but this offers nothing to the casual fan, and nothing to the serious fan. Fan Under Disappointing...
