City on a Hill: Sing Alleluia

City on a Hill: Sing Alleluia

It was such a good idea, no wonder they wanted to do it again. City on a Hill: Songs of Worship and Praise set a new standard for both all-star compilation projects and the burgeoning modern worship movement, racking up a Dove Award and powerful sales along the way. Sing Alleluia is the sequel to that project; Jars of Clay, Third Day, Caedmon's Call, FFH and the Choir, all of which appeared on the original, are joined this time around by Hill newbies Fernando Ortega, Jennifer Knapp, Nichole Nordeman, Bebo Norman, and Phil Keaggy. Reprising the successful formula of unique combinations, we have Knapp dueting with Third Day's Mac Powell on a lovely "Sing Alleluia!," while Nordeman's jazzy vocals are perfectly supported by FFH's harmonies on a radio-ready "Shine Your Light." Indeed, another strong point to this release is the songs, all of which are original (or in the case of a few traditional pieces, new arrangements). Songs like the light-rock "Communion" and the worshipful "Marvelous Light" are a nice addition to the modern worship subgenre, defying the new style's incipient stereotypes. Sing Alleluia creates a fresh atmosphere of praise and worship for a community of believers.
