The title might be Chicago Radio Soul, but it's really a 26-track compilation of soul that was released on Chicago-based Chess Records during the 1960s. Only one of the songs was a big hit (Fontella Bass's "Rescue Me"), though Jackie Ross's "Selfish One" and Mitty Collier's "Sharing You" did well on the R&B charts. There are also little-known singles by Etta James, Little Milton, Billy Stewart, and Denise LaSalle, as well as names that will only be familiar to serious soul fanatics, like the Gems, the Radiants, and Bobby McClure. Chess wasn't as much of a presence in soul as it was in blues, although by the '60s, it was concentrating much more on the soul market. On the whole this is decent if unremarkable '60s soul, showing the influence of both Motown and the crosstown Chicago sound of the Okeh label. High points worth noting by any soul fan are the girl group-tinged "I Can't Help Myself" (the Gems) and Jackie Ross's "Take Me for a Little While," a rare example of a Black soul cover of a single by a White female singer (Evie Sands).
