"No! Wait! Don't do it!" Patty O'Leary shrieked. Please! Don't slime me!"
"Sorry, Patty, but you know the rules," I said.
"A wrong answer means it's slime time! my sister, Ashley, added.
"Noooooo!" Patty wailed.
I leaned over the game board and pressed a stamper to the back of Patty's hand. A mark that looked like a splat of green slime appeared there.
"Yuck! That's so gross!" Patty pouted.
Ashley and I were playing the home version of our favorite TV game show, Double Trouble, with our friends Patty O'Leary and Tim Park. Patty and Tim were on one team, and Ashley and I were on the other.
Our basset hound, Clue, was hanging out, too. The five of us were spread out on the living room floor in our house.
I picked up the dice from the board and handed them to Tim. "It's your turn," I told him. "Go ahead and roll."
Tim shook the dice in his fist. "Come on six!" he cheered. He dropped the dice on the board. He rolled a five. He frowned as he moved his game piece along the board. It landed in the "ask a question" space.
"Excellent!" Ashley cheered. She reached over to give Clue a scratch behind the ears. "We are so good at this part!"
Tim picked a game card from the deck in front of him. I grabbed my pencil and paper.
In Double Trouble, one person on a team writes down an answer to the question, and the other personguesses what her teammate wrote.
Tim read out loud from the card. "What is your favorite color?"
I quickly scribbled something on the paper, then flipped it over so my answer was facedown.
Ashley smiled. "That's an easy one. Mary-Kate's favorite color is purple."
I grinned and flipped over my paper. I showed Patty and Tim what I'd written: PURPLE.
"You're right...again," Tim said in a bored voice. "That's ten more points for your team."
"Yay!" I cheered. I gave Ashley a high five. "Way to go!"
"But it's not fair!" Patty wailed. "You guys are twins! You know everything about eachother. Tim and I don't stand a chance.
I smiled. I hated to admit it, but Patty was right. Ashley and I were a totally awesome Double Trouble team.
"When you go on the Double Trouble TV show how, you're going to be the highestscoring players in history!" Tim told us.
I grinned. "We're definitely going to do our best."
"I just wish 1 didn't feel so nervous," Ashley said.
Me, too. I have about a jillion butterflies in my stomach," I admitted.
About a month ago, Ashley and I were shopping at the mall and one of the stores we visited was having a raffle. The grand prize was the chance to play Double Trouble on TV!
We bought two raffle tickets right away. But we couldn't believe it when the store called last week to tell us that we had won! Today was the day of our big TV debut.
Ashley checked her watch. "The TV people should have picked us up by now. You don't think they forgot about us, do you?"
"Forget about the famous Trenchcoat Twins? No way!" Patty laughed.
Ashley and I are kind of famous. We have our own detective agency in our attic. And together we are a lean, mean crimesolving machine.
Ding-dong! The doorbell chimed.
Ashley and I turned to each other. "It's them!" we said together.
Ashley rushed to the door and opened it wide. The rest of us crowded in behind her.
A beautiful blond woman in a suit stood facing us. "Hi, I'm Lauren," she said. "I'm with the game show Double Trouble. You must be the Olsens."
Ashley nodded. "That's right. I'm Ashley.
This is my sister, Mary her thumb at me.
"It's nice to meet you." Lauren shook hands with both of us. "So -- are you girls ready for your big TV appearance?" she asked
"Absolutely!" I cheered. "We can't wait!
"Great!" Lauren said. "Then let's go!"
She stepped to the side. Behind her, for us at the curb, was the longest stretch limousine I'd ever seen!
Whoa!" Tim gasped when he caught of the car. "Nice ride!"
"Yeah! It's almost as nice as the limo my hired for my birthday last year," Patty told us.
I rolled my eyes. To Patty, everything is competition.
Tim hung his backpack over his shoulder. See you later," he called as he stepped out the door. "Good luck!"
"I'm going to tell everyone I know that my friends are on television!" Patty said."Bye!" She followed Tim down the street.
Our mom and dad came to the door to greet Lauren. After Lauren gave my mom some papers to sign, we were ready to Ashley and I both hugged our mom and dad good-bye. Then we grabbed our backpacks and followed Lauren to the limo.
"We are so excited to be on the show," Ashley told Lauren.
"I have to admit," Lauren said, "I'm excited to meet you. I'm a big fan of yours."
"Really?" I asked.
"Uh-huh. " Lauren nodded. "You two are the best detectives around. Everyone knows that the Trenchcoat Twins can solve any crime.
Ashley and I smiled at each other. We do love, solving mysteries. But today we weren't detectives -- just contestants on our favorite game show!
Lauren opened the limo door for us, and Ashley and I climbed in. It was huge inside! There was a TV against the back of the front seat and a big sunroof over our heads.
"Wow," I said. "This is so cool!"
"Yeah," Ashley said. "I feel like a movie star.New Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley #27. Copyright © by Mary-Kate & Ash Olsen. Reprinted by permission of HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved. Available now wherever books are sold.
