The river is a 'long, dark, endless ribbon' of birds. A boy tries and tries to count them, but there are too many--thousands. Fweet! Fweet! Fweet! Chackle! Chackle! Chak! they call, migrating in their old, old, old, familiar way.

I read this book to my students each year, and each year I have to fight back tears. This is a powerful book about the tendency of men to kill anything that they can't use for profit or which they consider to be a nuisance. Perhaps one day the river will return.
