With performances by Brooke Shields and Robert Downey Jr. and athletes Allen Houston and Mike Tyson, the unconventional film BLACK AND WHITE cross-pollinates the predominantly white worlds of Hollywood and high fashion with the African-American-dominated realms of hip-hop and sports. The BLACK AND WHITE soundtrack follows suit, and its most inspired moments come from unlikely collaborations. On "Life's a Bitch," Everlast lays down a battle rap over a soulful beat from E-Swift from the Likwit Crew, while Mos Def waxes poetic with reggae soulman Samuel Christian on the island-spiced "You." One of the disc's most dazzling songs is "Year 2000," which pairs Xzibit's powerful rhymes with a vocal bridge from Korn's Jonathan Davis. The soundtrack's weakest moments, however, come when the lines between musical genres become too blurred. For example, Michael Fredo's boy-band pop song "Free" attempts to achieve hip-hop credibility by employing DJ scratches, but the experiment falls flat. But with contributions from Dead Prez, Kool G. Rap, Queen Pen, and Big Pun, plus solo shots from Raekwon, who co-produced the soundtrack, and Mobb Deep's Prodigy, the BLACK AND WHITE soundtrack is ultimately as groundbreaking as the film's subject matter.
