Overview

Dragons rule the world, united under the powerful dragon king Albekizan. Humans have been subdued for centuries, existing only as slaves, pets, and prey. Yet one man, the mysterious Bitterwood, strikes at dragons from the shadows, fighting a long, lonely war of resistance. When Bitterwood is blamed for the death of Albekizan's beloved son, Bodiel, the king launches a full scale campaign to rid the world of the legendary dragon-slayer-even if he must kill all of mankind to do so.

This new edition of Bitterwood has been revised and updated from the original paperback release.

Bitterwood started very slowly. I almost put the book down. This is the second time I started it and this time I decided to read a couple more chapters before making a decision. I'm glad I did. There is not a lot of subtlety in Maxey's attempts to make his points, but he does a good job with it. The world he paints is fantastic and original. You feel bits and pieces of other fantasy novels and movies all along, but he wraps them in a very comfortable way. Once the book gets going, it goes quickly. If you are looking for a literary masterpiece, don't read this. If you are looking for great entertainment and reminders of what things really matter, Maxey's your man.

The author gets you from the start and keeps on going till the end. There is little romance in the book, more of the story of life in the outer veil of old world. Where dragons rule and the humans are pets. Quite a twist in fate for some of the characters as the story unfolds.

This series seems to be very good. I'm almost done with this book & have all the others to go. Very good reading. Mixing God stuff with dragons is kind of interesting.

Ive only just started reading this book and Im compelled to write a pre-read review. First, why have dragons if they are simply going to have all human characteristics and mannerisms? Second, I just hit a description of the dragon kings "vast" kingdom. 100 miles!? Seriously? In dragon fly time thats like a half an hour to get to? Ill return to reading with hopes it will improve... Scifi novels tend to run in series, so I like it when I find a good standalone story. This one has a great mythology reminiscent of Planet of the Apes. The world is ruled by dragons and humans are little more than slaves or pets. But is this an alternate universe, or a picture of what our own might become?

If you are a fan of dragon novels and haven't read this yet then you should get hold of a copy and do so!As dragon novels go the story is pretty unique, not your usual human=good, dragon=bad scenario, and I very much enjoyed the change. There are a few twists and turns on the way and more than once I had trouble putting it down, I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. Not many books make me instantly order the sequel as soon as I reach the end, but this one has.

A fantastic melding of fantasy and science fiction. While the book begins leaving you with the impression of a realm so like the many others where dragons and humans mingle, as events proceed you will find that Maxey has really created something quite unique and enjoyable. In this first of the trilogy you will follow Bant Bitterwood in his mad, driven quest to destroy as many dragons as he can. You will also see the world from the point of view of an advanced dragon society as well as from the view of a human who came of age living in that society. And you will slowly learn how all of this came to pass. The pace at which the history of the world is revealed interspersed with some gripping action sequences makes the book fun and engaging.Maxey is a relative new comer and it is well worth giving his works a try.
