Overview

Bigger represents land we have yet to conquer. It brings on a new understanding of God and the power He holds. It offers deeper intimacy and a supernatural ability to trust what we do not know to the Almighty. Bigger is abundance. It’s more of Him, more freedom, more identity, more authority, and more power.

Whether he knew it or not, Nehemiah walked this process. He journeyed from brokenness to bigger. He cried hard, prayed hard, worked hard, and in the end he experienced more of God than he ever thought possible. This Bible study is an invitation for you to walk with me from brokenness to bigger. No matter how deep or how shallow the place we start, God always has more in store for us. Too many times we place a Band-Aid over what’s broken as a way to avoid pain. Problem is, we were never meant to live with Band-Aids. We were meant to live in wholeness, healing and healing. Because of Band-Aids we have become a culture of settlers. We settle down in the small, when, with a little work, bigger is right on the other side.

Can you hear Him calling? He has more for you. He never intended for you to sit in this. He never imagined you would make a home here. Those Band-Aids are ineffective. They will not do for you what He will. Will you take if off? Will you let the wall fall down? Will you trust His plans to rebuild? He’s calling you to bigger. Let your journey there start today.

Week 1 - Personal Guide

Sometimes it’s hard to see things for what they really are. There are days it takes everything I have to keep my head above water and other days when the worst struggle I have concerns who used the last bit of my favorite creamer or who didn’t forgot to put the lid back on the toothpaste!

On the hard days, struggling not to go under, I find myself clinging to God and His promises of bigger like never before. Other times I am less focused on my struggle and more available to notice the brokenness in the lives of others, like we did when we partnered with Yosselin, her cancer, and her desperate need for a new living space. There are always opportunities in brokenness to be available for others. Recognizing we are broken people, living in a broken world, frees us up to be honest and helpful with one another. Everyone has a story and everyone with a story battles to press forward.

When the personal battles we fight threaten to capsize us, they need our fullest attention. During these times it is okay to use our best energy to keep our head above water. Trying to help people experience what we are not currently experiencing ourselves can either be exhausting or motivating. It’s a both/and—we have a responsibility to reach out and help others, but we also have a responsibility to be aware of where we are personally. Believe it or not, we sometimes miss out on experiencing bigger by only focusing on the brokenness of others and never taking time to listen to what God might be saying to us.

God is multifaceted. He can do a work in us and through us, all at the same time. It is in the rhythm of spending intimate time with Him, time in community with others, and time out in the world that we experience bigger, both in and around us. A relationship exists where we fully live recognizing and responding to the voice of God on behalf of our own brokenness, while at the same time recognizing and responding to Him concerning the brokenness of others. Our broken state of being does not disqualify us. It is often from this place we serve Him best.

God is not interested in what we do for Him. He is interested in what we do with Him. Needing Him is what qualifies us.
Now, it’s your turn, these pages are totally for you. Write your brokenness openly all over them. Please don’t hold back. If you have to find a secret place to hide this book for now, then do it. I’m believing on the other side of this journey healing will feel so rich, you won’t hesitate to let people read these pages. God is biggest when we are most broken and His glory is shown all through our rebuilding process. So let’s deal with the pain, wrestle with the words of His Word and step out into seemingly impossible situations. Let’s push forward together and believe in what we won’t always be able to see.
In the box below are a few important definitions. These are words we will use often together and it will help to be on the same page as we start our journey.

Broken –past participle of break- having been fractured or damaged and no longer in one piece or in working order.

Brokenness - After something has been broken, but before it has been put back together.

Restoration - the act of restoring; renewal, revival, or reestablishment.

Walls - any of various permanent upright constructions having a length much greater than the thickness and presenting a continuous surface except where pierced by doors, windows, etc.: used for shelter, protection, or privacy. In our case walls represent something we have constructed for protection.

Redemption - an act of redeeming or atoning for a fault or mistake, or the state of being redeemed. deliverance; rescue.

Bigger – More than we’ve ever asked or imagined. Not necessarily physically (although sometimes it may be) but spiritually. Ephesians 3:14-20. Bigger can and often will happen internally before it happens externally. It is always defined based upon the situation and circumstances and dependent upon the plans for the Father.
