They may have had two Top Ten hits, but for all intents and purposes, Blue Swede are the very definition of a one-hit wonder. Their campy tribal reworking of "Hooked on a Feeling" was a gonzo near-novelty tune that stormed the charts in 1974. "Never My Love" followed later in the year, but few remembered that -- the "oogachucka" choruses from "Hooked on a Feeling" drowned them out. Given their limited number of hits, Blue Swede makes for a perfect choice for an installment of EMI-Capitol Special Markets' Back 2 Back series. Their partner, however, does not. The Raspberries were the first modern-day power pop band: the first band to harness the power of the Who and the melodicism of the Beatles. They had a couple of hits -- "Go All the Way" and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" -- but they were a cult band, not a one-hit wonder. There may be a handful of casual listeners who only want those two songs, but most anyone buying a Raspberries compilation nearly 30 years after the songs were recorded will want to go all the way and buy a true hits collection. Budget-minded listeners may find this a bargain.
