When playing a game of wits, never ever go up against the woman they call the Hellion . . .

Whether it's business or pleasure, Lord Robert Carlisle never backs down from a dare. But finding a husband for scandalous Mariah Winslow? It's one challenge he instantly regrets accepting. Even with all his connections and rakish charms Robert will have to use every trick in the book to marry off a woman with no dowry and no sense of matter how stunningly beautiful she is.

Mariah Winslow has no intention of being a pawn in Lord Robert's game. She knows he agreed to play matchmaker only to secure a partnership in her father's shipping company, a partnership that's rightfully hers. For now, though, she'll dress for the elegant balls he throws and dance with the eligible bachelors he chooses. But she won't be outwitted by the devil himself no matter how tempting and irresistible she finds him.

"With its strong feminist bent and lively battle of wills, Harrington delivers what readers crave: a smart, fun read." - RT Book Reviews

She's fire. He's ice. And, when they get together, there's steam aplenty! Mariah was my kind of heroine... spirited, forthright, compassionate, altruistic, independent and intelligent. But, she also had a softer, more romantic side. She was a well-rounded, likable character who immediately drew me in. Robert was strong, smart and sexy. He was a man with a plan and was determined that nothing or no one would get in his way. But, he was also brokenhearted and full of guilt and shame over his father's death, a proverbial "wounded bird". I just wanted to reach through the pages and give him a hug to comfort him. Aaaand, maybe I wanted to sneak in a squeeze of those well-defined muscles, as well. When Robert sets out to find Mariah a husband, in order to secure a partnership with her father in his shipping company, the battle, the sarcastic banter and the witty repartee begins. I loved everything about this book. It successfully continued the Carlisle series with all the drama and romance of its predecessors. *I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Forever (Grand Central Publishing) in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

As the Devil Dares is part of the Capturing the Carlisles series, however you do not need to read the other two books in order to read this one. Just be warned that you will want to read the previous two titles once you meet this family. Robert is determined to make his father proud, especially because of the events that occurred when his father passed away 2 years earlier. And to do that he HAS to be come partner with Winslow. Winslow wants his two daughters to be "ladys" in order to fulfill the promise he made to their mother. However Winslow's daughters have no desire to be ladys especially Mariah, otherwise known as the Hellion. Robert has to help Mariah have a season that ends in her marriage to an acceptable peer.....but Mariah wants to be her father's partner and not a lady or wife. At least she doesn't think she does. Now these two have to figure out if winning the war against each other is more important than accepting the love they may find? I have to say that I love Ms. Harrington's writing. It quickly pulls you into the story and leaves you eager to find out what's going to happen. I often find myself laughing out loud and smiling for no reason. The characters are well written and believable. The story is easy to follow and engaging. Ms. Harrington is becoming one of my top historical authors, as she stays true to the historical characters and ways of speaking without trying to turn them into characters who could be from today. Fans of historical romances with great characters, a wonderful setting, and a story that keeps you entertained and up reading all night need to pick up AS THE DEVIL DARES today! A great romance!!

I love a heroine with a backbone! Miarah did not disappoint. Robert, the last of the Carlisles brothers is struggling to overcome his guilt over his father's death. This seems to be the plague of all 3 brothers. It is always fun to see how an author can bring such opposites together. All around, a great read, entertaining and endearing. I did receive an advance reader copy, however, all opinions are my own.

Mariah Winslow is the oldest daughter, her mom died but she has her dad and her sister. She wants to work with her dad's company, Winslow Shipping. Robert Carlisle is the youngest of three sons and happens to be single but he wants a partnership in Winslow Shipping. He feels he killed his dad and needs to show he can make his dad proud. There are a few twists and turns to this story to shake things up. I loved the background and the descriptions were so nice , like racing a phaeton down St James St. She is smart, intelligent, beautiful and generous of heart. Robert does not want to marry. He wants to do something to make his family proud. I loved the plot, there was so much going on, She and her sister were very close as was Robert with his brothers. She was trying to be good because Elizabeth, Roberts mom was bringing her and her sister out. This was an excellent tale, it covered the full range of emotion. It catches your attention and does not let you go. I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed it.

Mariah is an excellent example of a strong intelligent woman who knows her mind unfortunately she lives in the wrong era. Oh but wait you need to read this book and see how she uses her intelligence. This by far my favorite part of this book. The author's writing skills in this area deserves top marks. She allows the reader to feel Mariah's frustration at being a woman instead of a man. Also, how she struggles to understand how to fit in the era she was born into. Even more intriguing is how she handles Lord Robert. I do love a frustrated man. Lord Robert fits this the bill. But there is a deeper side to him that no one sees but Mariah and the push pull to their interactions will make the reader laugh out loud, at times want to scream and other times cry. For me if I lived back then I am sure I would be like Mariah and I would hope with everything I have I could find someone like Lord Robert. This book deals with families that have lost how to connect with each other, people trying to right a wrong and receiving as well as giving forgiveness. I give it 4 stars and suggest you pick up a copy to judge for yourself.

I had a hard time getting into this book. I'm not sure, as I like Ms. Harrington's writing and have read her before. I also liked both the hero (Robert) and the heroine (Mariah). But the first half of the book was very slow going for me. I suspect this had something to do with the enemies-to-lovers trope, which is not one of my favorites. Given the enmity between the characters at the beginning, I think it was hard for me to get buy their blossoming romance. However, I found the last half of the book very enjoyable and even moving at times, particularly when Robert and Mariah share their grief over losing their parents. Perhaps the problem in the first half was the pacing. I really want to know more about Whitby--is he gay? Is he in love with Mariah's sister or even Mrs. Smith? I'm hoping he will get his own book; I hope Mariah's sister does as well.

I absolutely love Anna Harrington's historical romances! As the Devil Dares is the third book in the Capturing the Carlisles series and I believe it is my favorite so far. Who doesn't love a strong-willed hero and heroine whose passions flare in and out of the bedroom? Robert Carlisle strikes up a business deal with Henry Winslow hoping it is the perfect way to do something that would make his father proud, but the deal has the potential to destroy everything that Mariah Winslow cherishes and has a passion for. Mariah Winslow known around town as the Hellion bucks what society expects of young women by taking on causes her father doesn't approve of and wanting to work in the family shipping business which is unheard of for a woman. When Robert Carlisle becomes her father's business partner Mariah sees him as the enemy, but soon she realizes they have quite a bit in common and their attraction for one another takes precedent over their differences. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in this great series! I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

When Robert agreed to a partnership with Henry Winslow, he had no idea what he was getting into. Mariah has always dreamt about running the family business along with his father. However, his father had made a promise to her mother and he intends to keep that promise. The book is well-written and the characters are very well-developed. The plot flows nicely and the characters’ feelings are described in a way that you can feel them in your heart. Another positive point, at least for me, is the sense of humour. It made me laughed several times and, at the end of the book, I wanted to go on reading about them. I highly recommend this book to all readers who like a fun and enjoyable romance.

I loved Robert and Mariah's story!! When you pit two strong willed people wanting two different thing, you know there are going to be sparks! Harrington does not disappoint!! I couldn't put down the book because I just so invested in their story! For me, I think the bantering between Robert and Mariah was the best part of the book. I often found myself laughing out loud. Harrington is masterful in this part of her dialogue writing. You can't ask for better! The Carlisles are all married now, but I'm hoping we get the other Winslow sister's story!!

As the Devil Dares by Anna Harrington is book Three in the "Capturing the Carlisles" Series. This is the story of Lord Robert Carlisle and Mariah Winslow. I have read the other books in this series (and Loved them!) but feel this is easily a standalone book. Robert has been building up his wealth and connections for the past two years his main desire is to be a partner in the Winslow Shipping and Trade. Winslow Shipping and Trade is owned and operated by Henry Winslow, it is one of the biggest Merchant shipping company in Britain. One day while talking to Mr. Winslow about what Robert heard that Mr. Winslow might be expanding shipping routes and adding a partner, Robert learns that Mr. Winslow's daughters are a issue for him. Mr. Winslow goes on to say that his daughters, Mariah and Evelyn are in their seven and fifth season and with the oldest Mariah has a nickname 'The Hellion'. While talking 'The Hellion' was heard to be racing down the street with her sister by her side. Mr. Winslow turns to Robert and reports if Robert can find a respectable Gentleman by the last day of Parliament (about 7 months) to Marry Mariah, that he will give Robert a 20% partnership in his company. That is a deal Robert can't turned down. Mariah had always had hopes of becoming a partner in her father's business and had no real attention of marrying. But when she learns what her father and Robert are doing she doesn't take it well. Both Mariah and Robert where characters that you really enjoyed reading about. They had similar issues with a parents death and feeling responsible for it. I found this book hard to put down! Just Loved it!!

A fabulous romance with sparks abounding between these two who think they are against each other! I just adored the banter and antics that Mariah and Robert get into when around the other. Very well written with secrets and humor sprinkled throughout. The story keeps the pages turning because you just want to find out how it could all end happily! The secondary characters are lovable and fit right in. You won’t be sorry with this next Carlisle book! This author knows how to keep you intrigued. I was given the book, but this is my own opinion.

You can never go wrong reading a book written by the incomparable Anna Harrington! If you love Regency romance, you will absolutely love this book! Robert Carlisle is the only one of his brothers who hasn't been snatched up in marriage and he is definitely a rake. He wants to prove himself by succeeding in business, so he jumps at the chance to go into a partnership in Winslow Shipping. However, in order to get the partnership, he has to find a proper husband for Winslow's daughter, Mariah, better known as the Hellion for her scandalous escapades. All Mariah has ever wanted is to go into business with her father. But, he promised her mother that he would make sure that Mariah and her sister, Evelyn, become proper ladies. Robert doesn't plan to fall in love, but the sparring between him and Mariah leads to just that. Will they be able to put aside their quarreling and find true happiness? A very enjoyable book, with romance, a wonderful hero and a spitfire of a heroine. Add in a couple of steamy nights between the couple and you have the perfect read! Well done, Ms. Harrington, well done! I love the thought and research that the author puts into her books; you really feel like you are back in the Regency era when you read one of her books!

As the Dukes Dares brings the Capturing the Carlisles series to a rousing conclusion. Lord Robert, the youngest Carlisle brother wants very much to become a partner in Winslow Shipping, and in order to accomplish his goal, he has to find a husband for the owner’s older daughter Mariah, infamously know as The Hellion. Mariah doesn’t want a husband, and she also wants to be part of her family’s business. The battle of wits that ensues is intense (and quite entertaining). Robert and Mariah are terrific and well matched – strong, witty, and intelligent. The Carlisle brothers are well, the Carlisle Brothers. This is best exemplified by a rescue scene you don’t want to miss. The other secondary characters are wonderful. This story is a fast paced entertaining romp. The end is predictable, but getting there is quite a ride. Robert’s is the last story of a wonderful series, but if you are ending a series, this is the way to do it! I received and ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.

London - 1823 Henry Winslow and Lord Robert Carlisle are enjoying the warmth of a fire and a good cigar at Brooks’s. Henry owns Winslow Shipping and Trade and Robert, whose brother is a Duke, has worked hard to be able to ask to be Henry's partner. Henry knows he will want to retire before too long. In addition, Henry, a widower, has two daughters he would like to see married, especially as they are now in their seventh and fifth seasons. Robert figures they must be real dogs if as rich heiresses, they haven’t yet married. Robert’s own brothers are all happily married, but he is in no rush to marry even if his mother wants him to do so. Henry’s older daughter, Mariah, age 25, is known as “The Hellion” because she and her sister, Evelyn (Evie) choose to do what they want which results in scandal and damages their reputations. Ah, but Robert can't help but especially admire Mariah. She wants nothing more than to work at the shipping office and be a partner to her father in the business. She has been around the office for years and has learned all the aspects of the business. Henry offers a partnership to Robert if he and his family undertake to guide Mariah through the season and see her married all within seven months. Mariah is deeply hurt and furious at her father. Robert’s mother is the Dowager Duchess of Trent who enjoys helping young ladies with their seasons with a goal toward marriage. She graciously agrees to help both Mariah and Evie with their season. Mariah reluctantly settles into attending some soirees, but when Robert and Mariah are together, there is a lot of friction and sparring, but there is also a growing attraction. They continue to bait one another which only adds fuel to the fire. Which one will win out - their irritation for one another or their attraction? This is a good book and I always enjoy a story by this author. However, in this case, I found that the constant fighting between Robert and Mariah to be way overdone to the point that it became annoying to read it. In my opinion, this sort of thing needs to be considerably toned down in romance novels. Gah! Enough already. Copy provided by the author and NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

As the Devil Dares is the third book in the series but is also a stand alone story. This is a story about proving to your parents that they did a good job raising you and believing it yourself. Lord Robert was a rake and a scapegrace until the death of his father and is now trying to prove that he is worthy of the Carlisle name. In trying to secure a partnership with a leading shipping company, he agrees to launch Mariah on society and find her a husband. Mariah's only dream is to be a partner in her father's company but because she is a woman, this is a near impossible task. Robert and Mariah are constantly at odds but the sparks that fly between them are also leading to an extraordinary attraction. The more they battle, the more they learn about the other and the reasons behind their goals. A great story with engaging characters that will keep you reading until the very end. I received this ARC from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.

How far would you go to let your dream come true? Robert Carlisle wants to become a partner of Winslow Shipping, all he has to do is complete a simple task to proof his worth and that is to marry Mariah Winslow off to an eligible gentleman. Sounds easy, right? After all, Mariah is a beauty and intelligent and unfortunately she is “the Hellion”. A woman who prefers to get the partnership herself and work in the family business instead of being made into a boring lady. A wonderful read. The two keep clashing and throw stones into each other’s path, while their mutual attraction is constantly growing. While the plot is progressing you learn a lot about the reasons behind their behavior, their motives, their dreams and while they will never accomplish it. The two are very headstrong, stubborn, smart and likeable. You keep wondering if one will give up or both or how this might end. I can recommend the book in this series, it completes the others, but could also be read alone. You will be reacquainted to the late Duchess of Trent with her golden heart and the banter won’t disappoint. What I like is that you have not one weak character in the book, gentle, kind people, yes, but all of them have their attics and are smart, which I prefer.
