Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, faces a new challenge that threatens the balance of the world.

Wings of silver. Wings of blue. Mortal heart. Broken dreams. Shatter. Shatter. Shatter. A sundering. A grave. I see the end. I see. . . .

The world is in chaos as the power surge of the Cascade rises to a devastating crescendo. In furiously resisting its attempts to turn Elena into a vessel for Raphael’s power, Elena and her archangel are irrevocably changed. . .far beyond the prophecy of a cursed Ancient.

At the same time, violent and eerie events around the world threaten to wipe out entire populations. And in the Archangel Lijuan’s former territory, an unnatural fog weaves through the land, leaving only a bone-chilling silence in its wake. Soon it becomes clear that even the archangels are not immune to this deadly evil. This time, even the combined power of the Cadre may not be enough. . . .

This war could end them all.

ARCHANGEL’S WAR – Nalini Singh
“We watch,” the Primary said. “We protect.”

But things were altering in front of them, a faint glow emanating from where the aeclari had been before the filaments obscured both Raphael’s body and Elena’s chrysalis.

Beyond the balcony doors now partially covered with the snow silk of the filaments, the Bluebell turned. His eyes widened at seeing the ocean of filaments, the glow. But before he could open the closed doors, a familiar voice entered all their minds.

Leave now. It was an order from an archangel. Clear the skies above. Empty the land around. GO.
The Legion were moving even as the last word echoed in their minds. They were Raphael’s Legion, Elena’s Legion, and they had been given an order. The Bluebell wasn’t Legion. He was one of the Seven. Unique. With his own mind.

Torment wrenched his features, but he inclined his head, and the Primary saw him form the word “Sire.”

All of them moved.

The Bluebell dropped to the grass, then ran inside the house.

The Legion broke into four parts and swept the area. Winged beings were already flying toward the river at high speed, their faces stark and their jaws determined. The Legion dropped down in front of cars moving on the nearest road. The cars were not so close to the aeclari’s home, but the archangel hadn’t said how far to clear.

When the first two cars halted with a screech that caused a burning scent to rise to their nostrils, the Legion wrenched the doors open and hauled the startled vampires out. A group of the Legion rose into the air, two to a vampire. Another group found four humans in a third car, a vampire’s cattle heading home. The scared cattle whimpered at being taken by the Legion but didn’t struggle. Neither did the vampires after they saw the angels racing from the Enclave to the water.

Golden light poured from the windows of the aeclari’s home.

Many of the angels streaming over the water held vampires or humans in their arms, getting their households out of danger. The Bluebell was one of the last to fly out of the Enclave, and though the Legion did not speak to many outside of the aeclari, they spoke to him: Are the aeclari’s people safe? This was important. The Legion knew. The aeclari had bonds to those who lived in the house.

Yes, I got them out. The Bluebell, who could fly faster than the Primary and sometimes raced with the cars of the Blade and the Viper, fell off the cliff with his wings licked by a golden light so bright that it was difficult to face. In one hand, he held a large rectangular thing, in his other, items they recognized.

Several of the Legion flew to him, and took the things. They did not understand things, but these were linked to the aeclari in their mind.

Most of the angels kept on flying toward Manhattan, and those of the Legion that carried vampires or mortals kept going, too. But the Primary turned once he was over the center of the river, as did those of his brethren who flew only their own bodies.

The Bluebell halted in front of them, the silvery blue of his wings spread and his face awash in the scorching light that had turned the river to gold.

And the light, it grew, and grew, and grew.

Until at last, the light was so bright that it became fire and even the Primary couldn’t bear it and threw up his arm in front of his eyes. The last thing he saw was an intense white brilliance.

In the previous book, ARCHANGEL’S PROPHECY, the Ancient Archangel Cassandra’s millennia old prediction was altered considerably. This new path is thanks to Elena’s tenacity and Raphael’s refusal to let the fierce woman who is his heart be turned into nothing more than a supercharged battery vessel. The world changed while they underwent a metamorphosis of several months. Raphael and Elena give a whole new meaning to the phrase power couple including their love and passion that rockets up to Cascade levels. Elena 2.0 is a wonder and a sight to behold for all she can do. Raphael is no slouch either as his already supreme archangelic powers have been greatly increased by the most powerful Cascade known which continually rocks the whole world with chaos and catastrophe. Raphael and Elena are connected in a way never seen before startling and amazing everyone. Raphael literally gave Elena a piece of his heart while taking hers; what they are able to do because of his actions is astonishing. While she lost those beloved wings, Elena’s new superpower compensates in a remarkable way allowing her to continue as an angel-made, again without precedent. A dark and deadly fog has descended on China and when it dissipates, new unimaginable terrors are revealed that rock the angelic and human realms. The seriously evil Goddess of Death, Lijuan, has no plans to go gentle into that good night. It will take all the might of Raphael, Elena, the Cadre, and some quite unexpected allies to overthrow the seemingly undefeatable horror that is Lijuan and her massive army. The playbook is being continuously rewritten between the previously never before seen changes in Raphael and Elena, the new level of earthly devastation, and Lijuan’s utter hubris and depravity. Not surprisingly, since this Battle Royal has been building for some time with the previous major fights, it takes up a large section of the book. The Archangels have been preparing for war, but none could truly be equipped for what is coming at them. Cassandra and the Legion continue being an enigmatic factor; they play an important role in the increasingly violent world. The Seven do their part while Illium has to deal with an old sorrow and a new development in his personal life. Readers should prepare to be wowed by this book in every way. As Elena would say, major weirdness is happening all around. Events that have long been hinted at in the previous books angelwise are occurring right now; they keep coming at a rapid pace giving this book a lot of high energy and breathtaking intensity. ARCHANGEL’S WAR is truly an epic tale imbuing an intense level of emotion for characters we have come to care deeply about while Cascade driven events keep ramping up, and most especially, the war to end all wars. Ms Singh delivers this much anticipated book in a way that will satisfy every reader’s desire including some they never imagined. It is not hyperbole to say that fans will be thrilled and beyond pleased with this very essential Guild Hunter’s book that is not be missed.

this is the 12th book in the series and one of the best! Elena goes through another transformation and it is a nail biter. Archangels and Ancients rise to fight Lijuan and what a fight! No spoilers from me! I strongly recommend reading this series. The characters will make you laugh and cry.

I love Nalini Singh's books, but this series is the best! Elena and Rafael are well fleshed out, dynamic characters. Lijuan the penultimate villain. This whole series is worth reading multiple times. So glad I found it. I will get years of joyful rereading out of it.

Archangel's Prophecy left us with an Elena whose ever depleting energies culminated in her being consumed by a chrysalis, but not before Raphael put his heart within her (and vice versa) in order to, hopefully, give her the power to survive. Months later and Elena and Raphael emerge from the chrysalis alive, even is they're not entirely sure of what physical/powerful manifestations will occur. One thing is for certain, Lijuan, the archangel of China, supposedly still in sleep, is still amassing power. It'll take the entire Cadre working together to keep the Angel of Death from spreading her destruction. War is on the horizon and no one is safe. Again and again Nalini Singh shows that she's one of the best in terms of balancing long overarching story arcs with huge casts of characters. She seamlessly moves characters (both old and new, central and secondary) in and out of the narrative and makes each appearance an essential part of the story. I don't know that I've read another author who does this in such a way. Archangel's War is the culmination of all the books that have preceded it in the series. The Cascade has been building since book one and now twelve books in and we see it crest. I think I give nothing away, since it's all in the title to begin with, when I say that war is at our characters's doorsteps. What comes after this game changing book is as exciting as it was heartbreaking to see everything that transpires as Raphael, Elena, and the Seven fight for the world's survival. It's a difficult book to talk about because there is so much that happens within its pages. Plus there's the fact that I don't want to give anything away. It's definitely a book that you can't just pick up and read. You have to be caught up in the series, fully invested in these characters, in order to appreciate the ramifications that will come about from this book both good and bad. I loved the history that is infused here. So much about family and parentage. So much that hearkens back to the beginning of the series when Elena was still a mortal guild hunter and Raphael was a cold archangel. I enjoy the fact that the journey of the series hasn't just been Elena's, but Raphael's as well. They've both been through transformations and power upgrades and they've both dealt with it as a unit. I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here. Suffice it to say Archangel's War certainly brings about the end of a story arc. While there are interesting hints at things to come, I think we'll be turning away from Raphael and Elena for a bit to focus on Illium and Aodhan's stories respectively. For me, I read a lot into where Aodhan's story can pick up, but Illium is also faced with some stark revelations that came out of this war which I'm assuming will have to be dealt with. One thing is undeniable though, you can never go wrong with Nalini Singh.
