The 1860's were a lot more complicated than what you've been taught in history class.
Imagine traveling by horse drawn wagon with a teenage girl who really doesn't like the idea and lets you know it at every bump in the road. Imagine being the newly freed slave who has to ride with her!
Now add in outlaws who aren't all that good at what they do, Indians with strange ways of having fun, and top it all off with a Cavalry unit that has no business building anything, let alone a fort in the middle of hostile country. Welcome to No Man's Land.
Another Good One is a novel of historic insignificance about a fort no one will ever remember, and the people that went there. You didn't learn about Fort Prairie in school, because, well... Things didn't exactly go the way they were written in your text books...
