An American Icon

by Louis Armstrong

7 New & Used Starting at $5.00

After defining jazz as we know it in the '20s and remaining in the public eye as the leader of a swing band in the '30s and early '40s, Louis Armstrong reinvented himself yet again in the postwar years. Reemerging more popular than ever, Armstrong became primarily known as a pop star who also led a Dixieland band and played trumpet. By now one of the most beloved entertainers in the world, Armstrong stayed on the charts with a long series of hit singles. The great man also made a brilliant series of albums celebrating the great American songbook, including two composers long part of his own experience, Fats Waller and W. C. Handy, and team-ups with equals such as Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. This 1998 retrospective addresses the final 25 years of Armstrong's career, although unlike most multisamplers it offers no rare or obscure material, and a number of excellent Pops albums (like his superb sessions with the Dukes of Dixieland) were overlooked. Still, you'll never hear three CDs of more glorious playing and singing.
