Overview

Since Courtney Love has spent most of the past several years concentrating on playing roles, it would've been easy to forget just how personally revealing her musical work can be -- but this gnashingly confessional set drives home that point with passion that borders on the manic. America's Sweetheart, much like Hole's Live Through This, manages to reconcile fairly polished music and gnarled vocals; if anything, this disc is even more emotionally naked, with Love issuing threats and pondering her own demise with equal ferocity. A good portion of the album is given over to spasmodic thrash -- the barreling "But Julian, I'm a Little Older than You" gives a maximum dose of flailing, angular guitar to good effect -- but Love throws a few curveballs as well, such as the cinematic "Sunset Strip," which channels classic '70s California rock. Still, it's Love's presence that really dominates the disc, and whether she's boasting about (and/or bemoaning) her narcotics intake -- as on "Sunset Strip" and, naturally enough, "All the Drugs" -- or fretting over her sex life -- as on "I'll Do Anything," on which she wails, "Gimme speed, gimme white hot hate" -- there's no denying that she means every word. That can be frightening, especially when she's going on about cutting brake lines or starting fires, but it can also be affirming and exhilarating, as on "Zeplin Song," which blows well-aimed spitballs onto the tapestry of classic rock. Yes, the disc is something of an exercise in megalomania -- Love admits as much in "Hold On to Me," on which she chants "I am the center of the universe" like a mantra -- but it's far too fascinating to ignore.
