Description: This is a welcome pocket reference for veterinarians who have already completed acupuncture training, but are not yet proficient in the location or use of all the points. All points on the meridian channels are listed and fully described.
Purpose: The purpose was to gather descriptions and pictures of all the points in one small handbook, which appear in the second half, but the book also provides an overview of the Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine way of diagnosis in the first half. For practitioners of TCVM, this is a great reference to supplement books that fully describe TCVM.
Audience: The book is appropriate for TCVM students or practitioners — I would not recommend it for veterinarians with no previous training in TCVM. The author has done an excellent job of discussing the various treatment aspects of TCVM, point identification, and use. These parallel many of the better courses taught in the U.S.
Features: As a TCVM student, I appreciate that all points are listed for each meridian. Not only is there a written description, there is also a diagram and other nearby points. This allows readers to see the relation between one set of meridians and another. The color drawings show underlying tendons, muscles, and bones that are used as markers for the points, which is very helpful with point location. However, there are a few errors in point placement, whether as a result of the translation or not is hard to tell. For example, SI9 on page 153 is shown in almost the exact spot as TB14 on page 249, and the SI9 shown on page 249 is slightly caudal to the placement shown on 153. SI9 and TB14 are very close to each other, but they are not the same point although the diagrams appear that way. Just know that this is a reference to help you remember where the points are, and if a point doesn't feel right, verify it with one of the TCVM textbooks. I'm also disappointed that there are no references to TCVM textbooks, even though references aren't strictly needed, because a resource section listing available textbooks to enhance the understanding of TCVM would have been helpful.
Assessment: Other than the few minor errors in picture identification, this book mirrors information found in textbooks on TCVM, such as Xie's Veterinary Acupuncture, Xie and Preast (Blackwell Publishing, 2007). As a TCVM student, I found this quick pocket guide to be an enormous help in locating points on my patients.
