Though inevitably, albeit accurately, listed as the third "cool canary" (after Anita O'Day and June Christy) to graduate from Stan Kenton's Orchestra to solo stardom, Connor was hardly the runt of the litter. Rather, she was, and still is, a commanding stylist, capable of swinging irresistibly ("Blow, Gabriel, Blow") as well as giving subtle interpretations of quality ballads ("Lonely Town"). As these two Atlantic albums show, Connor's work has much more of an East Coast edge to it than her L.A.-based predecessors. Connor combined the feeling of New York jazz -- Al Cohn, Lucky Thompson, and Oscar Pettiford, whom she even mentions in ad hoc lyrics to "Everything I've Got," are all here -- with the repertoire of the old Upper East Side cabaret rooms, swinging many a song otherwise associated with Mabel Mercer, such as Bart Howard's rapturous "On the First Warm Day."
