A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It's all in a day's work for emma lee raines . . .

Bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she's suffering from “funeral trauma.”   It's trauma all right, because the not-so-dearly departed keep talking to her. Take Ruthie Sue Payne—innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee's granny—she's adamant that she didn't just fall down those stairs. She was pushed.

Ruthie has no idea who wanted her pushing up daisies. All she knows is that she can't cross over until the matter is laid to eternal rest. In the land of the living, Emma Lee's high-school crush, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, isn't ready to rule out foul play. Granny Raines, the widow of Ruthie's ex-husband and co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, is the prime suspect. Now Emma Lee is stuck playing detective or risk being haunted forever.

Thank you to the reviewers who tell me why they like the book rather than repeating the overview or writing a book report.  The why you liked it is so helpful!

Emma Lee Raines lives in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, where she works in the family business. The deceased at Eternal Slumber Funeral Home don't frighten her, but ghosts are another matter. Ruthie Sue Payne arrives at her own wake demanding that Emma Lee solve her murder. Now the entire town thinks she is losing it. Ruthie is her constant companion. This investigation could be very dangerous, but she has a partner, Sheriff Jack Ross. He wants to find the killer and to romance Emma Lee. Who committed the crime and why? Tonya Kappes has written a fast paced and humorous paranormal mystery. The characters are quirky and the dialogue is filled with humor. The story is fast paced and filled with red herrings and unexpected twists. The ending took me completely by surprise. I never guessed who the killer was. This book is a very satisfying read. Don't miss it.

So this is definitely going to be one of those great small town series. Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, and its residents are very unique, entertaining, and mysterious. It's impossible to not like Emma Lee. She is doing her best to be "normal" while trying to help so many people in the small town. Unfortunately, her fellow neighbors, and even her family think she is crazy from "Funeral Trauma." However, she has Sheriff Ross on her side, at least while helping him with the town's current murder investigation. Count me in for all of the future books for this series. It has small town charm, southern charm, and most importantly Kappes charm. You can't go wrong! This was such a fun book! I loved it!

What a perfect book to read this October! Tonya Kappes makes working for a funeral home look like fun. I found it a very entertaining read. I loved it when Emma Rae realizes that she can really see the poor departed Ruthie Sue. And when they worked as a team to find Ruthie's killer! It brought a tear to my eye when ..well you'll just have to read it to find out, won't ya? <3

I was lucky enough to get a review copy from Edelweiss thanks to the publisher. I've always enjoyed books by Tonya Kappes and was excited to get a chance to read the first book in her new series early. I absolutely loved A Ghostly Undertaking. This book was a great mystery that had me laughing out loud at times from the humor. Emma Lee Raines is such a fun character. The fact that she suffers from "funeral trauma" and can see dead people was so much fun.  I also loved how close Emma Lee became with Ruthie while working to solve who killed Ruthie. The mystery was really well done in A Ghostly Undertaking. I had my suspicions as to who the killer was and have to say the clues throughout the story were very well done.  I also loved the budding romance between Emma Lee and Jack Henry. Mostly I loved that Emma Lee couldn't believe that Jack Henry wanted to actually date her. Jack Henry made me fall just a little bit in love with him as he romanced Emma Lee.  There was such a sweet chemistry between them and I look forward to seeing this relationship grow as the series progresses. I've been a fan of Tonya Kappes for some time and absolutely love her new Ghostly Southern Mysteries series. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

I loved this book by Tonya Kappes. The Eternal Slumber Funeral Home is in small town Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. Emma Lee Raines and her sister run the family funeral home, and everybody in town thinks that Emma Lee is a little strange. Due to an accident, she can see ghosts, even though she does not want to admit it. Ruthie Sue Payne, has died, but this does not stop her from approaching Emma Lee and telling her that she was murdered and needs her help to find the person responsible. The sheriff in the town, Jack Henry, whom Emma Lee has a crush on, also thinks that Ruthie was murdered, and Emma Lee's granny is a suspect. So Emma Lee sets out to prove that her granny is innocent. She also has to convince the people in town that she is not crazy so that they will continue to use their funeral home, instead of thinking they will get the "Funeral Trama" from Emma Lee. I loved the characters in this book, they were so believable. If you love a book with suspense, humor, and fantastic characters that you cannot help but fall in love with, then you definitely need to read this one. And I absolutely, loved the way that Ruthie dressed!!

Tonya has done it again. One of the main reasons I love to read Tonya's books is because her characters are down to earth and believable. She always gives enough detail of the settings in the stories that you can picture them in your head and imagine what it would be like to walk down the street and bump into one of the characters. A Ghostly Undertaking is another one that has loveable characters, enough setting detail about the town and people that you can just imagine being there and a plot twist that will surprise you in the end. I love a mystery that keeps me guessing until the end. This is one of those mysteries. I thought I knew who did it, boy was I wrong! I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Very enjoyable new series from Tonya Kappes. I love a touch of paranormal in my mysteries and this one has it in spades... and not the kind to dig a grave. Hahaha! Emma Lee Raines was bonked on the head by a Santa figurine and now she sees ghosts. This, understandably, makes people uncomfortable so they tell her she has "funeral trauma". Ruthie Sue Payne, recently departed from this life, Wing leave End alone, insisting she was murdered. How to investigate while keeping those around her from thinking she's lost it?

I am really happy I got the chance to read A Ghostly Undertaking. It was right up my alley with the whole "talking to dead people" thing. I love the small town the story takes place in, and I love all the gossip and drama. Emma took a little time to get used to, because she kept doing things I would never do, but once we finally clicked everything was golden. I really enjoyed this story and I can't wait to read more from the series! I highly encourage you to check this series out!

4 STARS I liked the characters especially Emma Lee Raines. I kept wanting the best for her. More people to believe her. I want to see more of her in the future. Emma Lee Raines had a head injury caused by a plastic Santa falling off a roof. Ever since she woke up she has seen ghosts. She was diagnosed with “funeral trauma.” seeing too many dead guys. She is a undertaker for the past three years in the family business. She has lived in the funeral home all her life. Right now she is seeing Ruthie's ghost. Ruthie is telling her she was murdered. Ruthie Sue Payne—innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee's granny. Ruthie and Granny Raines own a inn together. Granny married Ruthie's ex-husband. Sheriff Jack Henry Ross is not ready to say Ruthie's death was a accident. His prime suspect is Granny Raines. He catches Emma talking to herself a lot. This story you were not sure who to trust. There is a lot going on. I want to keep reading and hope that things start going better overall for the characters. I was given this ebook A Ghostly Undertaking so I could give a honest review and be part of A Ghostly Undertalking blog tour.

LOVED IT! I like a little "woo-woo" in my mysteries so this new series caught my eye and did NOT disappoint! Emma Lee and her sister run a funeral home in a small Kentucky town but that's not all...Emma Lee finds that she can talk to recently deceased Ruthie who insists she was murdered. Throw in a hunky cop Emma Lee's had a crush on for years and it's a fun ride. I'm ready for more!!!

paranormal cozy mystery This is my first attempt at a paranormal mystery i think and i really, really enjoyed it. I was attracted to it because of it's setting....after having read Lexi George's books Southern regions picked my interest and from what i know of it ( which is very little) i felt that Tonya Kappes recreated the perfect ambience for the setting of this story. Emma is a character i can relate to, she is a little apart and never really felt like she belonged with the rest of her age...she doesn't take time to take care of herself bent to help other and she is loyal. She didn't always had her gift either or perhaps she had and it wasn't active anyway she suddenly sees ghosts even doesn't believe it at first thinking it's only a trauma from her line of work. However when a woman her family isn't friend with is found dead and her spirit comes banging at her door and interferes in her life she must help her to clear her grandmother's name yes but also to find her tranquillity back. I loved how Emma step in and just don't let thing happen. She was sure lucky to have Jack so understanding and open minded ( and in the right line of work when murders are the topic^^). The investigation is well written and even if i did guess the culprit its motives were surprising and simply the way Emma works to solve it was very entertaining and i didn't want to stop before i finished the book. It's definitively a series i want to continue ( happy to have the next book ready^^) as it promises a lot of humour and a touch of suspense while Emma is already a reason enough to keep enjoying these adventures. If you want a paranormal mystery i definitively recommend this one or if you simply want more of the setting.

Emma Lee and her sister Charlotte own and operate the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home in the quaint little town of Sleepy Hollow, KY. Ruthie Sue Payne has just died from an apparent accident, but Ruthie insists she was murdered. And who does she tell, Emma Lee, of course since Emma Lee can see and speak with ghosts. As far as the people in town know, she is suffering from "Funeral Trauma" and is considered slightly crazy. The Sheriff, Jack Ross, soon realizes that Emma Lee can see Ruthie and wants help in solving the crime. Somebody is determined to stop the investigation, but who and why? This is a fast paced and very enjoyable book. I look forward to reading more in the same series.
