This book presents a concise history of Imperial Russia from the perspectives of geopolitics, system of government, social structure and military history. While eschewing any explicit grand generalizations about the causes of that empire's demise in 1917, the author offers a fresh perspective on its evolution and institutions. Many original maps help the reader follow the story of imperial expansion.
