Los Van Van are the Rolling Stones of Cuba in that they've been around for over 30 years; the one big difference is that Los Van Van still produce huge hits. The group, led by the bassist and composer Juan Formell, revolutionized Cuban music by adding the drum kit, and rock, soul, funk, and jazz music from the U.S. The rhythm form they pioneered was once called "songo"; now it's simply synonymous with modern Cuban dance music. Full of great oceanic melodies that crest into hard, relentless grooves, 1999's The Legendary Los Van Van is one of the best of their sets out there. It's also intricate music, with a violin section (a remnant of the charanga orchestra) fitting in between several keyboards, a full percussion section, three vocalists, and Formell's formidable bass. This collection makes clear in a big and bold way what makes the group one of Cuba's biggest innovations.
