Robin Hobb has a fine sense of balance between providing the details that lend depth to her characters, their surroundings and motivations and the imperative to move the storyline forward. The pacing in this series of novels is quite good with the possible exception of Thymara’s ongoing reluctance to “choose”. Hobb has crafted a coming-of-age story for three different kinds of creatures: Elderlings, dragons and humans. This is quite a feat.: Overall, this series is an entertaining read and worth the reader’s time.

I step up, confused at first. Was she going to force me out? Did she want to punish me for something l did wrong? As Shryke continued, my worries diminished. I was being promoted. It came as a shock and l barely stuttered out "l do" on time as l listened. When Shryke finished, l bowed my head respectfully. "Th...thank you for this honour," l murmured. (I needed to update my bio anyway :D)
