This is Book 2 of Matthew Harffy's excellent Bernicia Chronicles series. In this episode, Beobrand has his baptism by fire, or iron as it is in this era. He is rewarded by King Oswald for his service by being given his own fiefdom and a considerable fortune. Rather than settling into a life of relative luxury as a Lord, he is called upon time and time again to take up his sword and serve his King. What joy he finds in life is short lived and Beobrand begins to believe he has been cursed by a supposed witch from whom he takes back a silver tray she had stolen from the Abbey. But something about her story rings true to Beobrand and his warriors. Perhaps the churchmen are not as forthcoming as they claim. You'll need to read the book to find out. There is plenty of battle action in this book, as in the first one, also some sadness that I won't divulge here. I am enjoying this series more and more an cannot wait to begin the next book. Good job.
