Red Pine's translation is a valuable addition to spiritual literature. But buy a hard copy. Maybe it works with other readers, but NOOK can't seem to handle the publication's unusual formatting. I've tried all the recommended fixes and I'm out of time and patience. Will try to get a refund of my $10.99 when my Visa bill comes.

This is the best translation of Tao Te Ching I have encountered, and I have read probably a dozen over the last 30 years. If you must have only one translation of Lao Tzu, this is the one.Red Pine himself does not say much, but provides excerpts from centuries of commentaries. His comments are almost entirely confined to the introduction, and this is proper: he is only one of many commentators. His attitude seems to be like Isaac Newton, standing on the shoulders of giants.

Loved this translation because it includes the original Chinese alongside, PLUS a diverse collection of famous commentaries on each chapter. Clearly a thorough, conscientious effort at rendering this classic. This is the all-around best of all the Tao-de-Ching translations I've read. Don't miss the the highly original introduction which has a unique description of the possible nature-based and philosophical origins of Taoism.
